Introduction
Atiq Ahmed (10 August 1962 – 15 April 2023) 62 years old, was an Indian gangster turned politician. He served as a member of the Indian Parliament and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Samajwadi Party. Over 160 criminal cases were registered against Ahmed and he fought several elections from jail. By March 2023, the Uttar Pradesh Police had seized assets worth ₹11,684 crore (US$1.5 billion) from Ahmed and his family. In 2019, he was convicted of kidnapping a witness who testified against him regarding the 2005 murder of his political rival Raju Pal. Ahmed was killed by gunmen on 15 April 2023 while on his way for a court-mandated medical check-up.
From 2004–2009, Atiq was elected as a Samajwadi Party MP for the 14th Lok Sabha from Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh. Raju Pal's wife named Atiq along with Ashraf and seven unidentified people in her FIR after Pal's murder on January 25, 2005. 2005 for the Allahabad West seat. It was a big loss for the Ahmed family as the seat fell vacant after Atiq won the Lok Sabha seat from Allahabad in the 2004 general elections.
As a result of extreme political and police pressure, Atiq Ahmed surrendered in 2008 and was released in 2012. He was expelled from the Samajwadi Party in 2008, and Mayawati refused to give him a ticket under the BSP.

Ahmed entered the world of crime by stealing coal from trains and selling it for profit. This later turned into threatening contractors to get government tenders for railway scrap metal. His first criminal record was in 1979 when he was accused of murder in Allahabad. Here he built his crime network. He also became the first person booked under the Gangster Act in UP. Ahmed worked with another notorious mafia member namely Chand Baba in Allahabad. After an encounter with his arch-rival Shaukat Elahi in 1990, Ahmed became very powerful and became known for extortion, kidnapping, and murder.
The former don-turned-politician started his political journey in 1989 when he won the MLA seat from Allahabad West as an independent candidate. Between the years 1999-2003, he was the president of the Apna Dal, founded by Sone Lal Patel. After retaining his seat in the next two legislative Assembly elections independently, Ahmed joined the Samajwadi Party and won his fourth consecutive term in 1996. He won his seat again in 2002 from Apna Dal three years later.
